Permaculture Design Course
The Permaculture Design Course (PDC) offers internationally recognized certification upon completion. It covers the basic ethics and principles of permaculture, which apply not only to the garden but also to everyday life and thinking. The course also includes several design methods including sector and zone analysis. Classes are devoted specifically to observation of natural patterns and systems, soil improvement, water saving and recycling, sustainable gardening and farming, composting, green and natural building, social permaculture, sustainable economics, and urban sustainability. There is a final design project which is done either individually or in small groups, and can be implemented directly onto the farm for others to see and use your personal design for years to come!
Medicinal Herbal Center
The introductory course on Medicinal Herbs gives an amazing foundation to the medicinal power of plants, how they are linked to our body systems and how to use them to prevent wilness, for hygiene, and aesthetics. Learn how to make soaps, salves, creams, tinctures, medicinal teas, syrups, etc. and how to extract essential oils for therapeutic uses, or to use in making products. All of the herbs used in our classes are grown and picked on the farm!
Green Building
Gain experience in constructing structures and furniture, using all recycled material! Our construction team of coordinators have tons of experience in building, and they have created most of what you can see on our beloved farm. Participants will be guided on how to use tools and reuse materials properly to build beautiful, long-lasting projects and leave your own imprint on the farm for years to come.
Mud Building
The mud building course teaches about several natural building methods. It reveals some of the ancient knowledge of sustainable building and history of tribes and people who have used and still do use this method for creating homes for themselves. Our course allows for the creation of different furniture and pieces of art made with very basic materials. The course is very hands-on and there are many opportunities to get your hands dirty building with mud!
Hebrew & Jewish Heritage
Get a taste of the ancient language and learn about the connection to Judaism through natural elements and a history of the land. Classes may be divided into different levels of previous Hebrew knowledge in order to ensure that everyone receives the education they feel comfortable with. Apart from weekly classes, there is a great opportunity to engage with the Israelis who live on the farm doing their Service Year before the army or their National Service in place of their army service.
Field Trips
There are three Field Trips that are part of the Eco-Israel curriculum, and we see Israel from the Negev Desert to the Golan. Traveling, exploring, and hiking the beautiful lands of Israel is a truly magnificent experience, and these trips cover a variety of ecological, cultural and historical points of interest in Israel. Our three trips are divided into the North Trip, South Trip and a backpacking hike to Jerusalem!
We believe that exploring ecology, sustainability and permaculture by studying a website or hearing a lecture is not enough. Sure, one can learn a lot about composting and the benefits of using a compost toilet from a book. However, actually using one for several weeks or even months results in an experiential shift in one’s understanding that renders using a “conventional” flush toilet a surreal experience.
This sort of consciousness shift can only occur by doing. That is, by living a truly sustainable lifestyle first-hand. With this in mind, Eco-Israel on the Hava & Adam Farm takes our cues from nature, and teaches via this very simple principle – learning by doing.
The vision and driving force of our curriculum is sustainable living through a balance of classroom coursework and hands-on fieldwork. Permaculture provides an exquisite framework and guide as we embark on the journey to sustainability. Permaculture is a model of design that is inspired and mimics nature’s ways and patterns. It is at the center of our curriculum and informs all aspects of our work on the farm.
